Cozy Rituals for January

With all the go, go, go of the holidays out of the way, we can really slow down and settle into January.  This should be a time of tuning in to ourselves and reflecting on the Winter season.  I’m sure you’ve heard many creators already say that New Year’s should be a time of hibernation, not of pushing ourselves to make good on our resolutions.  Those are better suited for Spring when the harsh weather of the Winter is over.

Here are some rituals to get you through January:

·       Smoke or Sound Cleanse your home

Using incense, palo santo, rosemary bundle, etc. or using a bell or clapping, reset the energy in your space by getting all the stagnant energy out.

·       Celebrate the New Moon

The January New Moon is on the 18th and is the first New Moon of Winter and will be in Capricorn.  The New Moon is always a good time for setting intentions for the next moon cycle.

·       Have a Winter Grounding Ritual Outside

If you live where it is cold, this may be a little more difficult but see if you can get outside and touch trees, spend time in nature, etc. to ground your energy.

·       Make a Simmer Pot

Add ingredients like orange peels for happiness, cinnamon for abundance, rosemary for protection and salt to have your whole house smelling great and protected.

·       Meditate with Crystals

Meditate while holding different crystals, depending on your focus.  Amethyst to calm anxiety, rose quartz for self-love, black tourmaline for protection, orange calcite for happiness, etc.

·       Practice Gratitude

Make a list of all the things you are grateful for and put it on your altar, then light a white candle as an acknowledgement of thanks.

·        Slow down and have a Kitchen Witch Day

Take a day to cook, bake, make whatever makes you happy.  Take the time to make items from scratch that you might ordinarily purchase like bread, graham crackers, mayo, butter, etc. and infuse with your Kitchen Witchy intentions.

·       Take a Ritual Bath

Take a bath infused with Epsom salts, oils, herbs etc. depending on your focus.  Tip: if you use herbs, put them in a little sachet for easy clean up and they won’t clog your drain.

·       Slow down, have a cup of tea, and relax

Have your favorite tea, like chamomile for relaxation and reflect on the season.

·       Set up a Winter/Imbolc Altar

Refresh your altar with pinecones, evergreen clippings, and wintery crystals like snowflake obsidian.  Imbolc is on February 1, 2026, and is a Celtic mid-Winter celebration of increasing daylight and giving thanks to Celtic Goddess Brigid.  Items specific to Brigid to add to your altar would be a Brigid’s Cross, extra points if you make it from scratch.

I hope these ideas inspire you to slow down and enjoy January for the Wintery month it is.
