Daily Mindfulness for the Witch

According to Google, Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment, including your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, without judgment.

Easier said than done.  I am someone who has practiced mindfulness for years and let me tell you, I still have to remind myself to be in the present moment.  I find that when I am having intrusive thoughts, my mind is racing, I’m worried about something in the future, feeling scattered, those are the hardest times to remember that only this moment is now

When I can take a few breaths, sit for a moment in silence and remember that I need to be focusing on the now, I can bring myself back to the moment.  Is it always that easy?  No way, lol.  Most of the time, when I am trying to focus on one task is when my mind wanders, thinking of the 43 things I need to do after work, worrying about something I did in seventh grade, thinking of what I need to do tomorrow, later in the week, etc.  It’s really hard to stop that noise sometimes.  It’s hard to be able to relax when you have anxiety about everything, however, it is possible.

The longer I have practiced, the easier it has become (most days).  So you may wonder, if intrusive and run-away thoughts are happening and you can’t relax, how does that affect your practice?  It can certainly have an impact on how your spells turn out, how you feel about that ritual, or just maybe causes so much anxiety that you’re feeling deterred from even practicing.  All of that is valid.  As a reminder, I am not a healthcare professional and this is only my opinion, not a substitute for medical advice.

This week, I found two great blogs that I would like to feature and both of them have amazing ideas on mindfulness and your witchy practice.  The first is Mindfulness: The Foundation of Spell Craft

This got me thinking, how much time consumes our days where we are not living in the present moment, and therefore, missing out on now?

-            Routine helps build mindfulness

-            Pulling a tarot or oracle card every morning

-            Casting a circle or doing some kind of protection working before you practice

-            Meditating

-            and for the Kitchen Witches, mindful eating.

The next ideas come from Integrating Mindfulness into Your Witchcraft | Wonderfully Witchy Web

The benefits of practicing mindfulness:

-            It helps you build a stronger connection with the natural world.

-            It allows you to better align your energy with your intentions.

-            Using breathwork when overwhelmed helps with anxiety or to ground you in the moment.

-            Setting intentions with purpose – taking you time to approach from a place of clarity, rather than performing a ritual just to say you did it.

Simple daily practices like grounding/earthing, mindful movement, and meditation are great foundations for mindfulness practice.  You can even find guided meditations for spell work.

This is all to say that, your practice is your practice and always do what feels right to you.

Also check out Molly and Madison on the podcast Demystifying Magic, they have some great episodes on how to practice if you are neurospicy.

Hope you have a great week!
